Indian constitution came into force on 26th January 1950. January 26 was selected as the date of commencement of the constitution of India because on this date in 1930, Indian people observed ‘Independence Day’ following the resolution of “Poorna Swaraj” of congress session held in the midnight of December 31, 1929 at Lahore.

The third reading of draft started on Nov. 14, 1949. It was finally passed and accepted on Nov. 26, 1949. The last session of assembly was held on Jan. 24, 1950, Which unanimously elected Dr. Rajendra Prasad as president of India as all 284 members of the assembly signed the official copy of the Indian constitution which came into effect from Jan. 26, 1950, known and celebrated as the Republic Day of India.
