Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China and is not part of the country. This is because during the Opium War in 1839, China was defeated by Britain. As a result, Hong Kong became a British colony for over 150 years from 1842 to 1997.

In 1898, Britain and China signed an agreement which stated that it would hand back the territory to China in 1997 and turn Hong Kong into a Special Administrative Region (SAR) for 50 years. After 50 years, it would be decided whether or not to join China.
